Discord Touts "Year Of The Linux Desktop" With Linux Client Improvements

Discord, the popular instant messaging and VoIP communication platform, announced some significant improvements being made to their Linux client.

Discord put out a video yesterday entitled "YEAR OF THE LINUX DESKTOP" where they go over some of the key improvements being made to the Discord Linux client.

Among the Linux client work being done is expanding the hardware-accelerated video encoding support across GPUs/drivers, improving screen capture support on the Linux desktop, and expanding the number of Linux distributions they are officially supporting with their proprietary client.

Given that Discord is quite popular with gamers, making these Linux client improvements makes sense given the increase in popularity of Steam Play gaming on Linux, the upcoming Steam Machine, and ongoing success of the Steam Deck among other Linux desktop/gaming accomplishments recently and yet more to come in 2026.

Those making use of Discord on Linux can learn about these improvements via their video that is embedded below.
