NVIDIA Upstreams Newer GSP Firmware For Open-Source Nouveau Driver

Written by Michael Larabel in Nouveau on 17 May 2025 at 05:00 AM EDT. 22 Comments
NVIDIA has supplied updated GPU System Processor (GSP) firmware derived from their R570 driver series to the upstream linux-firmware.git repository.

This updated NVIDIA GSP firmware is for consumption by the Nouveau DRM kernel driver for initializing Turing and newer hardware. The NVIDIA R570 GSP firmware upgrade is being done for supporting the on-going Hopper and Blackwell GPU support upstreaming. The existing GSP firmware binaries in linux-firmware.git don't support the newer Hopper and Blackwell GPUs but these new binaries do.

NVIDIA engineers have been working on Nouveau patches for the Hopper and Blackwell GPU generations. That code is under review and doesn't look like it will be ready for the v6.16 merge window but at least it continues moving in the right direction and there is no longer any blocker on having upstream GSP firmware support.
