OpenBSD 7.9 Released With Support For Up To 255 x86_64 CPU Cores, WiFi 6
Theo de Raadt announced the release today of OpenBSD 7.9 as the latest feature update to this unique BSD platform.
OpenBSD 7.9 on AMD64 (x86_64) is catching up to other operating systems in bumping the maximum CPU core count supported, given today's increasingly high core count systems. OpenBSD 7.9 on AMD64 bumped MAXCPUs from 64 to 255. The 255 limit is due to xAPIC requirements and until the OpenBSD x2APIC support is in better shape that will be the limit, even with today's dual socket Intel Xeon and AMD EPYC processors having higher CPU core counts.
OpenBSD 7.9 also brings fixes to the AMDGPU graphics driver, handles floating point state leakage on AMD Zen 1 CPUs, enables the Intel ICE Ethernet driver on ARM64, scheduler improvements, support for delayed hibernation, and a wide variety of other hardware driver improvements and new capabilities.
Also notable is OpenBSD 7.9 having initial support for 802.11ax wireless (WiFi 6) with its wireless stack.
