Ubuntu 25.10 Planning For Good NVIDIA On Wayland Experience, VRR & RISC-V Desktop
A public Ubuntu 25.10 desktop road-map was published today to outline some of the plans that Canonical engineers are beginning to work on ahead of the next Ubuntu Linux release in October.
Ubuntu 25.10 is a particularly important cycle due to it being the next LTS-1 release where Canonical tries to squeeze as many new features as possible in to allow for sufficient time for testing/feedback ahead of the all-important Long Term Support release. Thus Ubuntu 25.10 should be quite heavy on exciting new features for vetting ahead of Ubuntu 26.04 LTS.
Jean Baptiste Lallement of the Canonical Desktop Team today shared an Ubuntu 25.10 desktop road-map to highlight some of the desktop efforts they will be focusing on for Ubuntu 25.10:
- The GNOME 49 desktop for Ubuntu 25.10 including shipping new core applications like the Loupe image viewer and Ptyxis terminal emulator.
- Ensuring good Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support under GNOME.
- Polishing the NVIDIA Wayland experience on the Ubuntu/GNOME desktop.
- Providing a fully-functional RISC-V Ubuntu 25.10 desktop session.
- TPM-backed Full Disk Encryption (FDE) has been talked about for several releases now... The hope with Ubuntu 25.10 is to have TPM-based full disk encryption all in good order.
- Deeper enterprise integration with Microsoft Entra ID device registration.
- Improving the Ubuntu desktop documentation.
- Preparing for the European Accessibility Act (EAA) to ensure proper compliance and usability for accessibility support.
These desktop changes and more are in the works for Ubuntu 25.10 that will be working toward its stable release on 9 October.
