Ubuntu Will Switch To ntpd-rs As Its Next Rust System Component
Canonical engineers are planning a switch to ntpd-rs as the newest Rust-based system component for Ubuntu Linux for handling time synchronization.
Following Rust Coreutils, sudo-rs, and other ongoing Rust work around Ubuntu, Canonical is planning to adopt ntpd-rs as a Rust implementation for the Network Time Protocol (NTP) and Network Time Security (NTS) protocols client/server support on Ubuntu Linux.The hope is that ntpd-rs will be able to replace Ubuntu's existing usage of Chrony, LinuxPTP, and GPSD for time syncing needs.
This ntpd-rs adoption will be done for "upcoming Ubuntu releases" and given less than one month to go until Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, means it will not be part of this next Long Term Support release. Their plan is to have ntpd-rs available in Ubuntu 26.10 but the default change likely won't be until Ubuntu 27.04 next year.
