Not only is the coefficient of friction on the mousing surface for the Razer Mantis different between the control and speed versions, but also its relative design. With the Mantis Control, in the center of the mat is a large green circle, and topped off by the Razer logo. In the upper right hand corner of the mouse pad is the web address for the Razer's main website, while in the lower right hand corner "Razer Mantis Control" is printed. On the contrary, the Mantis Speed has the Razer web address and the logo as well as the product title; however, the green background is slightly different to distinguish the two Mantis versions. Outside of the Mantis aesthetics, the mousing surface can be considered over-sized measuring in at a hefty 444 x 355 x 4.3mm. The Razer Mantis is definitely one of the larger mouse pads to have been examined by Phoronix; however, it does not quite have the surface area as the Steelpad QcK+, which measured in at 450 x 400mm. However, the Mantis is thicker than the QcK+, due to a greater amount of foam.

Unlike previous Razer products that were built entirely upon their own innovations, for the Mantis they relied upon Everglide and their Fibertek surface. Razer had gone with using Everglide's Fibertek due to intricately woven fibers that ensure precise targeting and tracking without limiting the velocity or acceleration of mouse movements. Beneath the Fibertek cloth weave is a layer of foam as well as a rubber base to ensure grip on even the smoothest of surfaces. As mentioned previously in this article, the speed mat is designed for high sensitivity gamers while the control mat is optimized for low sensitivity environments.
