Intel Xeon 5150 Woodcrest Performance
Like Intel Core 2 Duo Conroe, the Intel Woodcrest continues to be clocked slower than the previous Xeon 5000 series, but its architecture certainly boasts huge advantages in all of the benchmarks. From Advanced Smart Cache to Macro-Fusion, the Xeon 5100 series processors offer incredible advantages even while lacking Hyper-Threading Technology. On top of the computing performance benefits of Woodcrest, we had also paid special attention to monitoring its power consumption. Even with the Intel Xeon 5150 squashing the Xeon 5080 in the GNU/Linux benchmarks, the power-consumption was half that of the Dempsey. The level of performance brought by these Woodcrest processors is truly phenomenal.
While AMD will be premiering their Socket F this August for their new Opteron chips, Intel will likely continue this performance lead with their quad-core Clovertown processors. The price for the Xeon 5150 is approximately $760 USD, while the Xeon 5080 is continuing to sell for around $870. For comparison on the AMD side, the dual-core Opteron 285 Italy sells for approximately $1,080. Look for more server performance figures to come out of Phoronix soon.
