Ubuntu 7.10 & Fedora 8 Performance Compared
As would be expected, in the gaming benchmarks the two Linux distributions had performed about the same. In three of the benchmarks, however, Fedora 8 had the marginal lead over Ubuntu 7.10. Even though Fedora 8 was on top 60% of the time, the differences were so small that a Linux gamer would not notice a change while gaming. In both the LAME MP3 and Ogg Vorbis encoding benchmarks, Ubuntu 7.10 was the winner by less than two seconds. Unless you are coding extremely large files, you will not notice a difference in either distribution. The benchmark with the largest performance delta was Gzip compression where Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon was six seconds quicker, which equated to being about 6% faster than Fedora. In the timed disk reads and RAMspeed benchmarks, the results were also very close.
The bottom line is with our hardware we had used and these common Phoronix benchmarks, the performance of Fedora 8 and Ubuntu 7.10 was deadlocked. There was no clear winner. If you are trying to decide between taking the Ubuntu or Fedora route, you're best off looking at the distribution's features and what they mean to you.
