GNOME 2.18.2 had shipped with SXDE 9/07 while shipping with 1/08 is GNOME 2.20.1. This updated desktop environment contains a number of enhancements. Among the other updated packages are VIM 7.1, Samba 3.0.27a, Firefox 2.0.0.9, Thunderbird 2.0.0.6, Pidgin 2.1.1, and Glade 3. For office productivity, StarOffice 8 Update 9 ships with SXDE 1/08.

SXDE 1/08 marks the integration of the OpenSolaris Web Stack project, which is made up of the OpenSolaris web tier components such as Apache, MySQL, and PHP. Found in SXDE 1/08 is Apache 2.2.6, Apache 1.3.3.9 (if you prefer the older branch), LightHTTPD 1.4.18 (if you prefer something more lightweight), MySQL 5.0.45, PostgreSQL 5.2.4, PHP 5.2.4 (along with modules such as the GD library), Ruby 1.8.6, and Squid 2.6. This also happens to be the first SXDE release since Sun Microsystems announced it would be acquiring MySQL AB.

Virtualization is a booming market and with Solaris Express Developer Edition 1/08 is the Sun xVM server, which was first introduced this past October. Sun's xVM server is based upon the Xen hypervisor with libvirt being used as the underlying virtualization API that supports interaction with not only Xen but also QEMU, KVM, and OpenVZ (though these technologies aren't found in xVM quite yet). The xVM server supports running Windows, Linux, and Solaris guest operating systems. This Sun virtualization solution supports both full virtualization and para-virtualization. To utilize xVM in SXDE you must boot to the Solaris xVM from the GRUB boot menu followed by using virt-install for installing the guest OS.
