5-Way Amazon EC2 Cloud Linux OS Benchmarks

Amazon's RPM-based operating system yielded the fastest results when it came to measuring the kernel's compilation time. Ubuntu 13.10 with GCC 4.8 happened to be the slowest in building the Linux 3.1 kernel in the cloud.

Compiler improvements lead to GCC 4.8 on Ubuntu 13.10 performing much better than older compiler releases with the C-Ray multi-threaded ray-tracer.

There was little variation in the m3.xlarge Amazon EC2 benchmark results when comparing the five Linux operating systems with the Parallel BZIP2 compression test.

Depending upon the workload, the fastest operating system for Amazon's EC2 Cloud varied a fair amount for the m3.xlarge instance with each Linux OS having its own strengths and weaknesses, some of which can be worked out if using a newer compiler, etc. In your own cloud performance investigations feel free to using the Phoronix Test Suite and OpenBenchmarking.org to get a much better understanding for the impact of system tunables, the affects of upgrading key system packages, etc.
