BIOS Optimizations For AMD 5th Gen EPYC Yield Greater HPC Performance & Power Efficiency
With the well known HPCG benchmark, following AMD's recommended BIOS tunables for HPC workloads allowed an increase of 21% over stock! Not bad -- especially keeping in mind that all of my EPYC / Xeon CPU review comparisons are done at the system stock/default configuration.
Making the HPCG result even more impressive is that with the tuned BIOS, the CPU power consumption and in turn the overall total system power consumption was lower than at the defaults...
And thus a 35% improvement in the system performance-per-Watt from following AMD's easy BIOS tuning guide for HPC workloads.
GROMACS was also enjoying better performance-per-Watt from the AMD HPC tuning recommendations within the Supermicro BIOS.
With the Graph500 benchmarks was also a decent uptick in performance while the tuning recommendations also led to lower CPU and system power consumption.
In the case of the CP2K molecular dynamics software there wasn't any increase in raw performance but the power efficiency of this 5th Gen AMD EPYC Supermicro server build did see a nice improvement.
