AMD RDNA 3.5 Graphics On 2025 Drivers: Windows 11 vs. Ubuntu 25.04 iGPU Performance
For some OpenGL coverage there are the demanding Unigine benchmarks native to each platform. While the RadeonSI Gallium3D driver has been aggressively optimized the past number of years, surprisingly the Windows 11 Pro performance with the Ryzen AI 7 PRO 360 iGPU was around 20% faster than Ubuntu 25.04 beta. It was also interesting to see the OpenGL performance for Unigine Heaven on Windows was slightly faster than using the Direct3D 11 renderer.
With the newer but still aging Unigine Superposition benchmark, the OpenGL performance on Windows was still faster than under Ubuntu 25.04 beta with Linux 6.14 and Mesa 25.0 drivers.
Similarly, Unigine Valley slightly favored Windows 11 over Ubuntu 25.04 for the graphics performance on this Lenovo ThinkPad T14s Gen 6.
Where Ubuntu 25.04 beta on OpenGL did outperform Windows 11 Pro was for the open-source Xonotic first person shooter game. Xonotic isn't too particularly demanding with modern hardware and the CPU efficiency under Linux can also play into these results with not being entirely GPU bound.
