AMD's Radeon Gallium3D Starts Posing A Threat To Catalyst

While the OpenGL 3D performance is becoming close to Catalyst with the R600 Gallium3D driver, there's still many features missing from the open-source driver ranging from OpenGL 4 support to CrossFire multi-GPU handling to more advance anti-aliasing modes and OverDrive/overclocking support, among others. The R600 Gallium3D driver performance on the four tested HD 5000/6000 series graphics cards was very good for most of the Linux OpenGL games tested, but with the more demanding OpenGL environments was where the open-source driver performance had fallen. With ultimate image quality settings in Xonotic and then the GL3 GpuTest workloads is where the Radeon open-source GPU driver was back to struggling. Regardless, great job to the involved open-source AMD drivers on - slowly but surely - making the open-source Radeon Gallium3D stack a very viable solution for the Linux desktop.

Stay tuned for the rest of the Linux performance data in the next few days.1
