Framework 12 Platform Tuning For Better Performance Or Power Efficiency

Right from the start with looking at the web browser performance under Mozilla Firefox, when running in the performance mode there was a nice 26% boost to Speedometer 3.1 performance compared to the default/out-of-the-box balanced settings.

The performance mode though did come with a significant increase to the CPU power consumption going up by 48% from a 9.3 Watt average to 13.9 Watts. The peak CPU power also nearly doubled from 14.9 Watts to 26.4 Watts. The performance and power saver modes ended up showing similar performance-per-Watt with the default delivering the best efficiency for this particular benchmark.

The Jetstream 2 browser benchmark was 12% faster in the performance mode but again meant a sizable increase in the CPU power consumption and in turn elevated thermals for the Framework Laptop 12. The power saver mode here delivered slightly better performance-per-Watt than the defaults.

If wanting better performance out of the Intel Core i5 1334U Raptor Lake SoC, the performance profile can yield faster browser performance but with significant albeit expected increased power use.

This is similar to what we've seen out of other modern Intel and AMD laptops when adjusting the power/performance tunables but in any case good to quantify it for the different laptops given firmware differences, differing thermal capabilities, and other platform characteristic differences.
