Ports on the HP Dev One include two USB3 Type-A and a headphone jack on the left side while on the right side are two USB3 Type-C ports, one HDMI output, and the power connection barrel plug. The laptop is thick enough that there is also a Kensington lock slot for added physical security. One of the few hardware critiques with the device is would have preferring to see USB-C power charging but hopefully that will be addressed in a future iteration of this Linux developer laptop. (Update: it does reportedly support USB-C power charging albeit not shipping a USB-C charger by default. Will re-test USB-C charging functionality.)

One of the nice hardware features of this laptop is having a physical slide cover for the web camera. It nicely fits into the laptop's design and initially didn't even notice the web camera cover.

The 1080p display on the HP Dev One is nice for the 14-inch form factor and the screen quality is particularly great and particularly great for a developer-oriented system with 1000 nit brightness.

The HP Dev One does ship with a conventional, proprietary HP BIOS/UEFI implementation. HP and System76 were evaluating possible Coreboot usage for this laptop but unfortunately didn't have a solution in time for production. Hopefully Coreboot will come down as an optional, user-initiated upgrade in the future or that any future iterations of the HP Dev One laptop incorporate this open-source firmware solution. But the HP Dev One does ship with FWUPD/LVFS support! So at least the proprietary firmware can be easily upgraded under Linux and hopefully HP ends up rolling out LVFS/Fwupd support across their product portfolio even for Windows devices to help their customers that choose to switch to Linux.

The build quality of the HP Dev One is great and certainly superior to that of what is often found with Clevo-type white box laptop designs running Linux. The laptop measures in at 32.3 x 21.4 x 1.91 cm and weighs 3.24 lbs / 1.47 kg. The HP Dev One features an HP Long Life 3-cell, 53 Wh Li-ion battery.
