With QGears2 using the X Render back-end and the gears test, the latest Ubuntu 9.04 packages had caused nearly a 60% drop in performance.
The text and image scaling performance through QGears2 with X Render had both lost about 60% of their respective speeds using the Intel 2.5.1 driver and newer development X Server.
