Intel Iris Pro 6200 Graphics - i965 vs. Iris Gallium3D OpenGL Performance
I also fired up APITest that was popular a few years ago during the days of "Approaching Zero Driver Overhead" (AZDO) OpenGL. The APITest results show there is a lot of potential for Iris Gallium3D with it already sharply outperforming the i965 driver. Though in some of the APITest results, there still is better performance needed.
With j2dbench that stresses the Java OpenGL pipeline, the Iris performance already beats out the classic i965 driver by a wide margin.
In the other Java OpenGL tests where Iris loses, it's not by a wide margin.
Obviously in the demanding Unigine OpenGL benchmarks, Iris still has room to improve.
If looking at the geometric mean of all the benchmarks carried out on this Intel Core i7 5775C system, the Iris Gallium3D driver at its preliminary state is already about 89% the speed of the official i965 driver, which isn't bad at all. It will certainly be very exciting to watch Iris Gallium3D mature this year and hopefully be in competitive standing by the time Icelake debuts.
