The binary NVIDIA Linux driver going back to the releases from this April have supported the GeForce 9800GTX. When using the NVIDIA 173.14.05 driver on Ubuntu 8.04 LTS with the Linux 2.6.24 kernel everything had functioned as expected. During testing, the GPU die had idled at about 62°C. Under load it would top out around 70°C. This is a bit warm but still safe and the fan during operation was fairly quiet.

With Hybrid Power Technology not being supported by the NVIDIA Linux driver and there only being one PowerMizer state for the GeForce 9800GTX, this graphics card is quite power hungry (and warm) even when idling. We'll be sharing power statistics from the GeForce 9800GTX in our upcoming full review of the ATI Radeon HD 4850.
