The Gentex PLACE Any Space smoke detectors aren't near as stylish as the Nest Protect units and a lot more bulky. There is an LED on the front of the unit that via the app can be controlled to different colors and brightness, but even maxed out isn't as bright as the Nest Protect pathway light. Besides being bulkier than the Nest Protect, the mounting plate also isn't as customizable as the Nest Protect for those wanting to fine-tune the orientation of the smoke detector if desiring parallel/perpendicular positioning to walls or other objects. With the Gentex PLACE units it all comes down to your electrical box orientation with the screw holes for how well the PLACE smart smoke detector will be aligned.

Setting up the Gentex PLACE smoke detectors from the app on Android was straight-forward... Very simple and akin to the Nest Protect experience. The app functioned fine without any issues or nuisances in managing the multiple smoke detectors.
From the app it's also possible to monitor temperature and humidity levels of given rooms too via the smoke detector. There are no monthly fees or added costs in using the PLACE app integration.
