While the newer GCC helps in the performance of the resulting binaries, those extra optimization passes, etc, lead generally to slower compile times. Code compilation speed has also been slowed down by Spectre/Meltdown mitigation.

For the most part there is a modest performance improvement moving from Scientific Linux 6 (or CentOS/EL 6) to the newer version seven.

The Hackbench Linux kernel scheduler benchmark is one of the big benefactors of the newer kernel release.
