The SilverStone XED120S WS was delivering great performance comparable to the XE360-SP5 liquid cooling setup... But with less stress and concerns on air cooling.

The XED120S WS is a very nice upgrade for those looking at high-end Intel Xeon / AMD EPYC / AMD Threadripper air cooling for a 4U server chassis.

Here are the CPU thermals for the 96-core AMD EPYC 9655 Zen 5 processor over the span of eight hours testing each of the coolers. The SilverStone XED120S WS nearly matched the cooling performance of the XE360-SP5 AIO liquid cooling with 51 vs. 52 degree average while the XE04-SP5 air cooler was at 62 degrees. The peak CPU temperature of the XED120S WS was also similar to the XE360-SP5 and around 14 degrees cooler than the XE04-SP5. That's rather impressive with the XE04-SP5 still running well enough that there was no thermal throttling or the like for this 400 Watt server processor while this upgraded SilverStone air cooler can deliver performance almost as good as their AIO liquid cooler but not having to stress about the liquid cooling aspect with maintenance or leak concerns.

👁 SilverStone XED120 WS installed

For those after a high-end Intel Xeon / AMD EPYC air cooler for high TDP processors, the SilverStone XED120S WS is a very capable offering as shown by these results and still conveniently fits within 4U height requirements and is easy to install. The only downside for this 4U high performance heatsink is the price which comes in at around $185 USD. Thanks to SilverStone for supplying the review sample for testing at Phoronix.
