Redesigned Thelio Major Elevates System76's All-AMD, Open-Source Linux Workstation: More Performance, Much Improved Thermals
The Threadripper 7980X to 9980X upgrade was as significant as the two-generation Threadripper 3990X to 7980X upgrade for the System76 Thelio Major.
The new Thelio Major was running significantly cooler than the prior generation Thelio Major workstations thanks to adopting water cooling and the new Thelio design improvements. The new Thelio Major CPU temperature on average was even cooler than the original Thelio Major with the Threadripper 3990X.
The new Thelio Major in turn also enjoyed lower operating temperatures for other system components too like the NVMe SSD storage and graphics card.
The new Thelio Major was also a big win for power efficiency with the CPU power consumption on average with the 9980X being lower than the 7980X. The AC "wall power" system power consumption was also much lower than the prior generation unit. On average this Thelio Major workstation with Threadripper 9980X and Radeon AI PRO R9700 was consuming around 428 Watts on average with a peak of 576 Watts.

The new System76 Thelio Major delivers immense performance capabilities while operating more energy efficient and with noticeably better thermals than prior Thelio Major workstations. The improved thermals also led to the Thelio Major being quieter than its predecessors. With the combination of AMD Ryzen Threadripper 9000 series and AMD Radeon AI PRO R9700 graphics, it's also possible to have a fully open-source workstation without any proprietary driver components. The open-source friendly workstation is rounded out by the new Thelio Major chassis even being an open hardware design,
