Ubuntu Linux Squeezes ~20% More Performance Than Windows 11 On New AMD Zen 4 Threadripper
Somewhat surprisingly, Geekbench 6 reported around 6% better performance on Windows 11 for its multi-core test or unchanged performance for the single core test.
With the brand new Blender 4.0, Ubuntu Linux continued to consistently deliver better performance than Windows 11 on this AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7995WX workstation. We see this consistently across a lot of Intel and AMD hardware that Blender performs much better on Linux than Windows, take note artists!
The Appleseed renderer was also tending to perform the best on Linux for this HP Z6 G5 A workstation.
With the proprietary V-RAY renderer, Ubuntu 23.10 was around 10% faster than Windows 11 on this AMD workstation.
When taking the geometric mean of all the dozens of benchmarks carried out on this HP Z6 G5 A workstation, Ubuntu 23.10 was 19.5% faster on average than Microsoft Windows 11 Pro as shipped by HP. As shown in the many individual results, the Windows vs. Linux performance difference can vary quite a bit. Linux continued to consistently outperform Windows with Blender and other CPU-based rendering workloads, other creator software like Intel oneAPI toolkit components, encoding 4K video content, and other creator workloads.
Regardless of whether you are a Windows or Linux fan, the AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7995WX is an incredible HEDT/workstation processor.
