AMD EPYC Performance Over The Past Six Years Of Ubuntu Linux LTS Releases
Ubuntu 22.04 didn't offer much for this mature AMD EPYC 7601 server platform but does have newer versions of packages and other general improvements that may make the upgrade worthwhile.
In cases like shipping with the newer PHP, there continues to be non-hardware specific performance improvements.
AMD EPYC 7601 launched back in mid-2017 at which time Ubuntu 16.04 LTS was the newest long-term support release available. A half-decade later and going through to the newly-released Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, the performance is 27% higher for the geometric mean compared to its initial state. However, that geometric mean figure has barely budged from where it was in Ubuntu 22.04 LTS given the already mature platform state by that point. In any event for those curious how the AMD EPYC Naples performance has evolved over the past six years of Ubuntu LTS releases, there are the dozens of AMD EPYC 7601 Ubuntu LTS benchmarks in full using this OpenBenchmarking.org result file.
