30-Way Graphics Card Comparison On Ubuntu Linux 14.04 LTS

While the AMD FX-8350 was a bottleneck in the Xonotic Ultimate tests, it's interesting to point out the NVIDIA Linux graphics driver was achieving much higher frame-rates. The AMD graphics cards were hitting a wall at 85~95 FPS with the Catalyst driver in this configuration while the NVIDIA graphics cards were hitting a wall just below 160 FPS.

The Catalyst driver with newer hardware at least obtains good scores in GpuTest's torturous Furmark, albeit a completely synthetic test.

Hopefully these Linux graphics card performance numbers were helpful to you if you're curious about Linux GPU performance or are looking at a GPU upgrade to coincide with the upcoming Ubuntu 14.04 Long Term Support release.

If you wish to see how your own system performs against these 30 different graphics cards, it's very easy by just installing the Phoronix Test Suite on the Linux distribution of your choice (and it's also packaged for most distributions) and then run just run phoronix-test-suite benchmark 1403054-PL-UBUNTU14019.
