โ‡ฑ Shark League for the Atlantic and Mediterranean

The Shark League

A coalition focused on securing science-based conservation of Atlantic sharks and rays

Meet the Team

Sharks are among the ocean's most vulnerable yet under-protected animals.

Many populations are overfished and too few countries have science-based catch limits or enforceable finning bans. The Shark League works to change that by advancing responsible, region-wide protections through international fisheries bodies.

Focused on the Atlantic and Mediterranean, we collaborate with governments and partners to secure urgent policy improvements that safeguard these species, and the ecosystems that depend on them.

Latest report

Bridging the gaps that hinder shark conservation

A groundbreaking analysis of Atlantic shark and ray protection measures under CITES and ICCAT, and recommended improvements at both national and international levels.

"Steady, science-based engagement in fisheries management is vital to ensuring the recovery of many migratory shark populations. Itโ€™s encouraging to see leading members of the Shark Alliance - key drivers in EU shark conservation improvements more than a decade ago โ€” expanding their influence across the Atlantic through the Shark League."
Maria Damanaki
former EU Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries
โ€œThe member groups of the Shark League have long been terrific partners for my labโ€™s efforts to lead in conservation-relevant shark research. They reliably check in about the validity of shark science claims encountered in the fisheries world and we in turn look to them for guidance in making our projects applicable in a conservation policy context.โ€

โ€œThe Shark League has set a standard for effective conservation coalitions, consistently tackling complex challenges within particularly tough fisheries arenas. Through their long-term collaboration with a wide range of stakeholders โ€” including animal welfare organizations as well as aquariums and fishing groups โ€” theyโ€™ve been able to demonstrate broad public support for needed safeguards, thereby moving governments in the right direction, time and time again.โ€

former deputy director of wildlife at the
Humane Society International

Coalition partners

In 2017, leading organizations in science-based shark conservation and stakeholder engagement formed the Shark League coalition.

The Shark Leagueโ€™s core work is supported by a grant from the Shark Conservation Fund.
