Thereโs no question that The Rolling Stones managing to last for a full fifty years without splitting was an impressive achievement - even if Keith Richards really is the worldโs only known immortal man - but The Kinks managed a not-unimpressive thirty-three years themselves, and were almost as crucial a part of the British Invasion of the U.S. in the sixties as the Stones and The Beatles. The Ivor Novello award for an outstanding contribution to British music tells you all you need to about the importance of Ray Daviesโ songwriting; the likes of โYou Really Got Meโ were instant classics. In 1996, after gradually becoming quieter and quieter in terms of activity, the band split, but Davies continued to make solo records and play his own shows, too. The rumour that a reunion might be on the cards continues to do the rounds, though, with both Davies and his brother, Dave, suggesting that itโs a very real possibility in the past few years. If it does happen, expect a slew of classics from a live band more than capable of giving the Stones and The Who a run for their money; like those contemporaries of theirs, The Kinks are British music icons.
