Dash attack

From SmashWiki, the Super Smash Bros. wiki
Jump to navigationJump to search

A dash attack (ダッシγƒ₯ζ”»ζ’ƒ) is an attack performed by pressing the attack button while dashing. Most dash attacks come out quickly and cover a large horizontal range, and due to being one of the only attacks a character can use to interrupt their initial dash, function as a primary burst option and approaching attack. However, they typically have noticeable ending lag that makes them committal and relatively easy to punish, especially on shield.

Prior to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, many dash attacks could be used for cross-ups due to a large amount of momentum inherited from the prior dash. Although Ultimate's reworking of jostle mechanics makes most grounded moves either more difficult or impossible to cross-up, a limited number of dash attacks retain the ability.

If the grab button or either of the shield buttons is pressed repeatedly right after attempting a dash attack, the attack will be canceled and turned into a boost grab. Similarly, in Brawl, many dash attacks can be interrupted by performing an up smash in a technique labeled the dash attack canceled up smash (DACUS) to provide a large boost of momentum. Certain dash attacks are fast enough to hit before the up smash comes out, allowing for a Gatling Combo.

Notable dash attacks[edit]

πŸ‘ Image
Roy's dash attack in Melee, showcasing its infamous hitbox.
  • Luigi's dash attack has been infamously inconsistent in most games. Up until Brawl, a developer oversight left it without a proper finishing hit, making it extremely unsafe on hit. It remained an extremely committal and inconsistent move until major adjustments in Ultimate.
  • Roy's dash attack in Melee is infamous for not hitting properly because the hitboxes are active for the same amount of frames as Marth while being much slower. As a result, most of the frames are active before Roy swings his sword, and barely cover the swing animation.
  • Kirby's dash attack in Melee is the only one in the series that can carry the user off platforms.
  • King Dedede's dash attack is the strongest dash attack in every game from Brawl onward, being stronger than most smash attacks and able to KO most characters at 75% from the center of Final Destination. Conversely, it is the slowest of its kind, making it a very unorthodox dash attack.
  • Wolf's dash attack in Brawl is the only one in the series to bring all the momentum from the dash to an instant halt.
  • Diddy Kong's dash attack in Brawl is one of Diddy Kong's best moves, as it is interruptible as soon as the last hitbox clears, giving it virtually no ending lag and strong combo potential at a variety of percentages.
  • Prior to Smash 4, Peach, Zelda, Pit, and Mewtwo had unique dash attacks while holding battering items, which allowed them to hit twice, and several times for Mewtwo's.
  • Meta Knight's dash attack in Smash 4 and onward is infamous for its fast frame data and ability to initiate extensive up air ladder combos, effectively serving as a low percent KO confirm in many cases.
  • Palutena's dash attack is the only one to grant any type of invincibility, allowing it to outright beat most moves.
  • The dash attacks of Villager and Isabelle are the only ones that are projectiles, and due to being able to fly off a ledge, are the only ones able to hit a large distance off stage.
  • Like many of his other attacks, King K. Rool's dash attack utilizes his unique Belly Super Armor, being the only dash attack in the game to have armor.
  • Snake's dash attack in Ultimate is one of the best dash attacks in the game due to its fast startup, arm intangibility, high base knockback and ability to setup edgeguards. It is highly effective at crossing up and covers a very large horizontal range, giving Snake one of the best burst options in the game.
  • Fox's dash attack in Ultimate especially is known for its fast frame data and ability to KO confirm at high percents using the long-lasting late hit.
  • Greninja's has one of the fastest FAFs of any dash attack in Ultimate, while also having high combo potential, making it fairly spammable.
  • Ganondorf's dash attack is considered one of the best of its kind in Ultimate, due to being one of the strongest ones while having fairly modest ending lag. Furthermore, the late hit launches upward and is able to combo into many attacks.
  • Meta Knight, Sephiroth and Sora are the only sword-users that do not use a sword for their dash attacks.
