This was stated by Presidential Office adviser Mykhailo Podolyak during an appearance on ProTV Chișinău, as Ukrinform reports, citing Point.
“We understand that the Transnistrian region could be used by Russia to simulate strikes in the rear of the Ukrainian front or to target logistics, and therefore we want to secure ourselves from this perspective,” Podolyak said.
He reminded that a contingent of Russian troops is stationed in Transnistria and confirmed that mine-laying has been carried out along the border with Moldova to prevent the movement of hostile groups.
“There is a contingent of troops there. But in order to prevent Russia from using the opportunity to destroy logistics and create movements, as happened in Belarus, we are carrying out these mine-laying measures,” Podolyak noted.
In addition to mine-laying, according to the Presidential Office adviser, the Ukrainian authorities have decided to strengthen border control.
“Yes, there are additional units of border guards carrying out enhanced monitoring of the territory,” Podolyak confirmed.
He noted that checkpoints on the Transnistrian section of the border have not been operating for many years, but still require strict monitoring.
“All checkpoints have been closed since the period when Russia took control of the Transnistrian region, that is, since 1990–1991. None of the checkpoints are functioning, but they must remain under control so that Russia cannot use sabotage groups and provoke ground actions, disrupting logistics,” Podolyak emphasized.
As reported by Ukrinform, according to sources in Ukraine’s Defence Intelligence (HUR), Russia intensified its activities in Moldova’s Transnistrian region at the end of 2025 attempting to divert Ukraine’s resources toward the threat from this enclave.
