U.S. Senators from both the Democratic and Republican parties have issued a statement in support of maintaining the United States’ membership in NATO.

According to Ukrinform, this is stated in an statement published on the official website of Senator Chris Coons.

Democratic Senator Chris Coons, Ranking Member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense, and Republican Senator Mitch McConnell, Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense, made a joint statement regarding U.S. membership in NATO.

“The United States joined NATO in 1949 when the Senate voted to ratify the NATO treaty, and the United States will remain in it. The Senate will continue to support the alliance for the peace and protection it provides America, Europe, and the world,” the statement emphasizes.

The Senators stressed that NATO is the most successful military alliance in history: “It has underpinned the security of the United States for more than 70 years.”

They also pointed out that the only time NATO initiated military action was in collective response to an attack on the United States.

“NATO troops fought and died in Afghanistan and Iraq alongside American forces. The United States must not take this sacrifice – nor our allies’ commitment to make it again – lightly,” Coons and McConnell noted.

The Senators added that disagreements among alliance members have existed for as long as the alliance itself.

“Americans are safer when NATO is strong and united. It is in our interest for all allies to tend this unity with care,” the joint statement says.
