⇱ Zelensky: Strait of Hormuz can be reopened only through joint international action

President Volodymyr Zelensky is convinced that, when it comes to lifting the blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, only joint action by nations can yield results.

The head of state expressed this view in an interview with NewsNation, according to Ukrinform, citing his Telegram channel.

"Our message to the United States and the countries of the Middle East regarding the Strait of Hormuz was that we are open to discussing this issue. As of today, I do not see any country that could lift the blockade on its own—only joint steps can yield results. Ukraine has experience launching a grain corridor in the Black Sea despite Russia’s attempts to block the supply of food and other goods. The situation is similar now, but it concerns energy,” Zelensky said.

He noted that the Ukrainian side’s proposal, based on its own experience, was as follows: the war and negotiations on opening the Strait of Hormuz can proceed in parallel. According to the President, it is worth trying to find a diplomatic solution, and this could be beneficial to both sides.

“An alternative step could be establishing unilateral control over the strait, as Ukraine did with the grain corridor. This would require interceptors, military convoys to escort ships, a large integrated electronic warfare network, and other tools. We are ready to help with this,” he said.

The head of state added that Ukraine is not yet involved in resolving this issue.

“So far, no one has made such a request. We are merely sharing our expertise. If one day our partners wish to make use of it, we will be ready,” he said.

As reported by Ukrinform, President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Ukrainian experts in the Middle East first analyzed the level of protection of facilities, and now the defense sectors of partner countries are formulating their requests to the Ukrainian side.

On March 30, Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Ukraine had discussed cooperation with Middle Eastern countries regarding maritime drones and the unblocking of sea lanes.
