Chad is experiencing one of the most complex and protracted humanitarian crises in the Sahel, driven by a combination of regional violence, climate shocks, and recurrent health emergencies. The country is hosting more than 1.5 million refugees, along with hundreds of thousands of internally displaced people and returnees.

Southern Chad remains affected by intercommunal tensions over vital resources and regional dynamics linked to the Central African Republic. Women and children, who represent more than half of these populations, are at the heart of this crisis with tremendous protection needs.

The impact of the neighbouring conflict in Sudan continues to unfold. As of November 2025, more than 888,000 refugees and 330,000 returnees have been registered. The majority of them are women and children, who arrive traumatized by the violence, exhausted by the flight, and destitute of everything. In addition to this devastating situation, the pressure on host communities remains considerable. The cholera outbreak, declared in July 2025 has worsened.

In 2026 the UN and partners will need for US$986 million – including $540 million dedicated to refugees – to help 3.4 million people. This is out of the 4.5 million people – or one in five people in Chad – who urgently need life‑saving support. The response will focus on life-saving assistance, protecting rights and preserving livelihoods.
