Kobanê, a city in northern Syria, has long stood as a symbol of resilience especially since 2014, when it withstood a brutal siege by the so-called Islamic State (ISIS). In a historic stand, Kurdish fighters, supported by international allies, managed to repel ISIS, marking the group’s first significant defeat. For many, Kobanê’s victory was a turning point in the fight against ISIS, symbolizing both the strength of Kurdish resistance and the broader struggle for self-determination in Syria.

Today, Kobanê faces a new threat not from ISIS, but from Turkey. The Turkish government, wary of the Kurdish-led self-administration in northern Syria, has intensified airstrikes and supported ground offensives by the Syrian National Army (SNA), an Islamist militia. These assaults aim to encircle Kobanê, cutting off vital supplies and placing its residents under siege once again.

Kobane: The City That Won't Fall
Im Krisenmodus

Talal Sadun, a native of Kobanê, describes the daily horrors of living under constant bombardment. With airstrikes hitting civilian areas indiscriminately, the toll is devastating. Kobanê’s residents, including fighters of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), have pleaded for international support, urging countries like Germany, Canada, and the United States to intervene and stop Turkey’s attacks.

The situation in Kobanê remains dire, and the calls for help echo the sacrifices Kurdish forces made in the past — when they played a crucial role in defeating ISIS and safeguarding Europe’s security. As Turkey continues its offensive, the international community faces an urgent question: Will Kobanê, once a beacon of resistance, fall to yet another wave of violence?

We’re now offering the podcast Im Krisenmodus in English to reach an even wider audience. The issues political journalist Jan Jessen explores are transnational in nature — from war zones to humanitarian crises, these are stories that transcend borders. By making the podcast accessible to English-speaking listeners, we hope to build a broader, more diverse community that engages with voices and perspectives from around the world.
