Biography
Roger Federer is a Swiss former professional tennis player. He was ranked world No. 1 by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) for 310 weeks.
Roger Federer was born on the 8th of August 1981 in Basel, Switzerland.[1] His father was (private, still living), of Swiss-German descent, and his mother was (private, still living).[1] Roger only had one sibling.[1] He grew up in nearby Birsfelden, Riehen, and then Münchenstein, close to the French and German borders, and speaks Swiss German, Standard German, English, and French.[1] His parents taught him how to play tennis, squash, basketball, and other sports. It is said that
- Since the end of the 20th century, Martina Hingis and above all Roger Federer have been in the limelight, having achieved worldwide fame as the best tennis players.[2]
Roger was subject to compulsory military service, as were all male Swiss citizens.[1] He was ruled "unsuitable" in 2003 and so did not fulfill this obligation.[1] Also in 2003, Roger was described as being born in Bale, 185 cm tall, weighing 80 kg.[3] In regards to his success at Wimbledon, Federal Councilor Samuel Schmid said this:
- [It is] "a historic day for Swiss sport. I hope that this remarkable feat will serve as an example to the youth of our country."[3]
Roger married Mirka Vavrincová, a former tennis player, on the 11th of April 2009.[4] She had retired seven years earlier due to a foot injury.[1][5] The ceremony was a small one, in his hometown of Basel.[4] According to Roger it was "a beautiful spring day and an incredibly joyous occasion."[4] They had announced the month before that they were expecting their first child.[4] Roger and Mirka first had a set of identical twin girls,[6] and later fraternal twin boys.[1][7] His older sister had also bore twins.[1][8]
