Biography
This August Oemcke had settled in New Zealand in around 1909, probably having arrived as part of a German band. In 1912, following the death of his wife back in Germany, Oemcke remarried, this time to a New Zealander, Elicia Hunter. By 1917, Ella (fifteen years old) was living with her father in Onehunga, while Rose (seventeen years old) was employed as a servant in Northcote (both suburbs of Auckland); see New Zealand Register of Aliens, 1917 (Wellington: Marcus F. Marks, 1917), 406 (‘Demcke [sic.], August’), 341 (‘Oemcke, Rose’), and 407 (‘Oemecke, Ella).
