3 Lies of P

A twisted fairytale

There's an abundance of games that follow a similar gameplay formula to the Dark Souls series by FromSoftware. So much so that it can be difficult to see how all of them don't blend together with their similar characteristics. And yet, Lies of P manages to offer something new to an already over-used style of gameplay. The game has a story that is loosely based on the classic story The Adventures of Pinocchio, with players taking control of a puppet of the same name who explores a city called Krat. The city has fallen under a plague of disease that petrifies people, and has become overrun by rampant puppets that continuously cause havoc. Throughout the game, players can make choices that affect various aspects of the story, which follow some of the themes from the original Pinocchio story.

Much like other Souls-style games, combat can be vicious and challenging, with even the smallest battles becoming struggles for survival. The larger fights can be very intimidating and force players to push the limits of their patience and mettle. Since its initial release, the game has received multiple updates that add new weapons and outfits, including a collaboration with the release of Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty. Lies of P was added to the monthly games lineup for PlayStation Plus subscribers that own a PS5. Anyone that has the PS Plus Essential tier or higher can download and play the game with an active subscription.

2 Twisted Metal 3 and 4

Drive around like crazy

With the second season of the Twisted Metal live-action series being released, it was inevitable that more Twisted Metal games would make their way onto PlayStation Plus. To celebrate the release of the new season, PS Plus subscribers that have the Premium tier can access the classics catalog to play two more Twisted Metal games that were just added: Twisted Metal 3 and Twisted Metal 4. Just like in the TV series, the story within the games follows a major competition where people drive vehicles and try to eliminate each other. The winner gets the chance to meet the mysterious Calypso and be granted one wish by him, which can be anything they desire. Although the prize is very intriguing to everyone, the journey to get there is treacherous, with psychotic warriors driving all types of destructive vehicles.

The gameplay in both titles is very similar, with many of the differences coming from the story and visuals in each. Twisted Metal 3 takes place about two years after its predecessor, while Twisted Metal 4 is set much later to further the lore of the series. There are multiple playable characters with their own type of vehicle to drive, with some being wildly designed machines of destruction. Many of the characters that appear in these games also make some sort of appearance in the live-action series, with the popular insane clown Sweet Tooth being a big focus. However, the TV series has a few changes from the plot of the games, which heavily inspired it.

Both games also come with trophy support when played through the PlayStation Plus Classics catalog, which is different from their previous releases. If you're in the mood for some vehicular mayhem and want to get a briefing on what the TV show will be like, these are two PlayStation 1 classics worth downloading.

1 Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut

Defining 15 years of gaming goodness

Within the 15 years that PlayStation Plus has been around, there have been some amazing game releases for various PlayStation consoles. One of the biggest releases for the PlayStation 4, and eventually the PlayStation 5, was Sucker Punch Production's action game Ghost of Tsushima. The game has received a lot of praise for its beautiful visuals and epic story, which is set in feudal Japan during the years of the Mongol invasion of the island of Tsushima. Players take control of Jin Sakai after failing to repel the Mongol army in battle, and follow him as he fights to save his homeland from the invaders. Using a combination of stealth and sword combat, Jin hunts down many of the key figures of the Mongol army and takes revenge for the attack on his clan and home.

One of the best aspects of Ghost of Tsushima is its beautiful and detailed landscapes that players can traverse. Some locations are colorful and bright with great effects that make it feel like a painting come to life, while others convey the harsh conditions of a war-torn environment filled with danger and death. And yet, the game still manages to balance both equally and showcase the best parts of them while pulling players through an epic story about honor, sacrifice, and duty in ways that few other games can do well. It is simply a gorgeous game that tells a part of history not often explored, but renders the island of Tsushima with incredible levels of detail and reverence.

Ghost of Tsushima has a Director's Cut version that can be downloaded from the PlayStation Plus catalog that includes every piece of content released for the game, including the free multiplayer mode update that came after the initial release. For anyone looking to play one of the prettiest-looking games in the PlayStation 5 library, this would be the one to do so. There have been many other blockbuster games on the PlayStation 5, but not many of them can compete with the visual splendor that Ghost of Tsushima provides on screen. Sucker Punch Productions is set to release a sequel called Ghost of Yotei for PlayStation 5 in October 2025.
