Summary

  • The RX 9070 GRE goes global: higher clock but fewer shader/RT cores and 12GB VRAM versus 16GB on 9070.
  • Same $549 MSRP as RX 9070, making GRE a weaker value versus non-GRE 9070 and the 9070 XT (+$50 better perf).
  • Good to see more AMD midrange options, but market appeal depends on availability, revisions, and pricing.

AMD rolls out exclusive discrete graphics cards for the Chinese market with the Great Radeon Edition (GRE) moniker, before launching them globally. We saw this with the AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE, which launched in 2023 for China and early 2024 for the rest of the world. It was a decent enough GPU, sitting below the RX 7900 XT with a slightly more affordable price for those on tighter budgets. AMD is back at it once again at Computex with the RX 9070 series and a new GRE card, the Radeon RX 9070 GRE.

Meet the new Great Radeon Edition

It's great, but maybe not quite as great

Like the 7900 GRE that came before it, this is a slightly less capable binned 9070. What's interesting is the price, $549. This is in line with the existing 9070, which places the RX 9070 GRE in a precarious position as it competes with an arguably better GPU at the same MSRP. Sure, GPUs and other PC parts aren't typically found at MSRP anymore, but this is still a slight kick in the teeth for those who held off buying the RX 9070 to see what the GRE would offer. Let's compare the two together below.

The RX 9070 GRE has been available in China since May last year. According to AMD, this GPU launch is designed to bring more value to 1440p gamers with 12 GB of VRAM, which should be more than enough for most games at this resolution. The issue comes when comparing this card to other RX 9070 series SKUs. The non-XT 9070 is a better option at the same price. And the 9070 XT is simply the one to buy anyway, with better performance for just $50 more (at recommended listing prices).

Still, it's good to see more GPUs come from AMD during a time when it can prove difficult to source a card at this level without spending a small fortune. Whether this takes off in the global markets remains to be seen, but we're sure there's more from the company with drive revisions and software improvements. The RX 9070 GRE will be available on June 1 for the aforementioned $549. As well as this new card announcement, AMD also rolled out the new Radeon AI PRO R9000 for workstations.

For everything else at Computex this year, keep it tuned to XDA.
