Animal Crossing: New Horizons - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition was surprisingly announced by Nintendo on Thursday morning. It's releasing next January, and the Switch 2 launch will coincide with a massive new update for the game.
The free update will introduce a new resort hotel on the island pier for online play. Meanwhile, players can expect features like mouse controls and GameChat support from the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition of the game.
When is the Animal Crossing: New Horizons - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition release date?
It's out sooner than you think
Nintendo has confirmed that Animal Crossing: New Horizons - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition will be released on January 15, 2026. It will retail for $65, while the upgrade for those who already own the game will cost $5. Overall, that makes it much cheaper than some of the Nintendo Switch 2 games announced so far. The Version 3.0 update for the game will launch on the same day.
Released right at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, Animal Crossing: New Horizons became a massive hit. It's now one of the best-selling first-party Nintendo Switch games. Its gameplay loop, which sees players slowly build up an island and interact with its residents in real-time day-to-day, has really resonated with people.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition will obviously have a higher resolution than its Nintendo Switch counterpart, but it's also going to take advantage of the Switch 2's unique hardware features. Players will now be able to use the hidden mouse control functionality of the Joy-Con 2 controllers as they design rooms, create custom designs, or write on the island's bulletin board.
Using a megaphone item in-game, players will also be able to use Switch 2's microphone to speak to villagers in-game. Multiplayer lobbies are also being upped to 12 players and will support GameChat. That's certainly enough to make it notable as the first Switch 2 exclusive of the new year, as it's launching ahead of games like Mario Tennis Fever and Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream.
For those who don't have a Switch 2 yet or are just content playing the original version of the game, the Version 3.0 update dropping on January 15, 2026 will also bring a lot of exciting new features. Namely, players will now be able to help Kapp'n run a resort on the island by decorating guest rooms and crafting certain items. This earns tickets that can then be spent on new decorations.
Additionally, the maximum storage size is being increased to 9,000, and players will be able to store trees and shrubs. Finally, collaboration characters and items from The Legend of Zelda and Splatoon series will be unlockable for those who can use amiibo from that series while playing.
I'm a little surprised to see Animal Crossing: New Horizons - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition announced so suddenly like this, as I was honestly expecting a brand-new entry in the series sometime in the next year or two. That said, all of these additions from the free update and Nintendo Switch 2 Edition definitely seem like enough to court me, a lapsed Animal Crossing: New Horizons player, back into playing the game.
