Summary
- Apple will use Google's Gemini to power its revamped, more personal Siri later this year.
- Apple Intelligence tasks stay on devices and Private Cloud Compute to preserve Apple's stringent privacy standards.
- Adopting Gemini ends Apple's OpenAI relationship — the OpenAI partnership will close when the update ships.
Apple has confirmed that it will use Google's Gemini AI model to power the upgraded, more personal version of that Siri it plans to launch later this year, confirming several months of rumors.
In a joint statement about the multi-year partnership, Google and Apple said the following:
"After careful evaluation, Apple determined that Google's Al technology provides the most capable foundation for Apple Foundation Models and is excited about the innovative new experiences it will unlock for Apple users. Apple Intelligence will continue to run on Apple devices and Private Cloud Compute, while maintaining Apple's industry-leading privacy standards."
Apple says that Apple Intelligence will still run on Apple devices and Private Cloud Compute. The Cupertino, California-based tech giant has been working on an upgraded, more personalized version of Siri that understands personal context, for the past year. Last March, Apple delayed the smarter version of Siri's release after stating that the project was taking "longer than we thought," leading to the company's AI efforts falling even further behind the competition.
This marks a stark change for Apple given it's currently working with OpenAI's ChatGPT for Apple Intelligence. While Siri operates on-device just as it always has, Apple Intelligence users have the option to tap into ChatGPT for more knowledge-based questions. Apple's unified approach to Siri with Google means that its partnership with OpenAI will come to a close whenever Siri's Gemini-powered update releases.
Given Apple is so far behind its competitors in the AI space, it makes sense for the company to select Google's Gemini as its go-to provider in the space, especially given that the company's recently launched Gemini 3 AI model is believed to be one of the best out there right now.
