Indie titles are usually the best that gaming has to offer. Sure, you can get your hands on the latest Triple-A games, but many of them have become a disappointment. On top of this, massive game developers seem to be out of touch with what the average gamer wants. When you dive into an indie title, you know that a lot of love and attention went into it. You know that the creators truly cared about the project and went through with it because they had an idea that they wanted to stick with. Here are some of the best indie titles ever created, so the next time you want to try something new, you might just give the little guy a chance.

5 Stardew Valley

The coziest adventure

You might remember the Harvest Moon series from back in the day. Stardew Valley has a lot of similar qualities to that franchise. The game follows your character as you move into a new home in the countryside. Your new home is rather run down, and the land definitely needs tending to if you want to be a farmer. From here, you have the freedom to explore. Visit the town, learn about each of the characters' backstories, and maybe even indulge in some romantic relationships. Stardew Valley is one of, if not the coziest, games I have ever played. If you looked up relaxation in the dictionary, you'd probably find this indie title.

These 10 indie games became massive hits against all odds

Against all odds, these indie games made it to the top of the charts while coming from humble beginnings.

4 Minecraft

Yearning for the mine

Thanks to how massive the game has become, some might not remember the humble beginnings of Minecraft. This game was once a small indie title that many played on the PC. It wasn't until Microsoft got involved that it was ported over to the Xbox, and it blew up. Since then, Minecraft has become a cultural phenomenon. There isn't a single gamer or non-gamer who hasn't heard of this title. It is just proof that any game can become big. Now, Minecraft is 100 times the size it was at the start and has tons of additions. If you were to travel back in time to the game's original release, you would be amazed by how different it has become. I remember when the world was limited to a 256-block area. Those times were much simpler, and we didn't need to worry about all the mobs there are now.

3 Outlast

The start of a horror franchise

Outlast is another indie title that blew up. The original title follows journalist Miles Upshur as he explores Mount Massive Asylum. Armed with nothing but a night-vision video camera, you must navigate the asylum, avoiding the dark dangers that lie within. As someone who is a seasoned horror-game fanatic, this title is one of the few that spooked me when it was first released. Since then, we have received a second Outlast game, as well as Outlast Trials, an online cooperative game that focuses on solving puzzles and escaping death. Again, this is a title that any horror fan knows and will most likely praise.

2 Hollow Knight

Still haven't gotten Silksong

Hollow Knight is a Metroidvania-style game that many praise and place on a pedestal high above other indie games, and for good reason. While I couldn't possibly tell you anything about the game's story aside from being a needle-wielding bug knight trying to cleanse the infection, the gameplay is fast-paced and extremely fun. What you will remember most about Hollow Knight is the unforgettable soundtrack created by Christopher Larkin and the beautiful artwork by Ari Gibson. If you haven't given this game a try, do so before we get Silksong in the next 10 years. Trust me, you probably have a long time before it is released.

10 indie games you should play at least once in your life

Indie titles are a goldmine of unforgettable gaming experiences. Here are 10 must-play indie games for everyone

1 Clair Obscure: Expedition 33

Recent and amazing

Clair Obscure: Expedition 33 may count as an indie game to some and not count as one to others. It was created by Sandfall Interactive, a much smaller-than-average studio created by game developers from different studios. In my book, it is an indie game because it didn't have the massively high budgets that the high-end studios get. Either way, this title is one of the best that has been released in 2025, and is one of the best turn-based action titles I have ever seen. The praise that this title has received is well-deserved, and the art direction is absolutely amazing. Don't believe me? Try it out for yourself and fall in love with it just like I did.

Indie titles are amazing

Sure, there are a lot of games that have been created by large studios. Despite this, indie developers continue to make games that they love and have a passion for. Many of these titles end up becoming so well-liked that they skyrocket into the mainstream, and everyone is talking about them. Think of all the viral games that people can be seen playing. A smaller development team created each of them. Sometimes, there are even games created by a single passionate creator. You might have even played an indie title and not known because it looks and plays as good as one created by a Triple-A studio.
