Summary

  • Borderlands 4 on Switch 2 targets 30FPS, with potential drops during intense moments.
  • Gearbox CEO confirms Borderlands 4 will require a download, even for physical copies.
  • Performance issues on Switch 2 don't deter player enjoyment, as seen with Donkey Kong Bananza.

The Switch 2 has been a hit among fans, and game developers have been trying to work out how to squeeze their games onto the system. We've already seen the appearance of game key cards, which are a physical medium that still requires downloading the game before you play. We've even seen people cancel their Doom preorders because the Switch 2 cartridge didn't contain the actual game.

Now, Gearbox is working hard at getting Borderlands 4 running on Nintendo's newest console, and as you may expect, hitting the high FPS counts on the Switch 2 is proving to be quite difficult for the company. The CEO has stated that people wanting to take Borderlands 4 with them on the go should expect around 30FPS of performance, with some drops when things get a little hectic.

In a post on X, the CEO of Gearbox, Randy Pitchford, took to the social media website to discuss the company's plans regarding Borderlands 4 for the Switch 2:

The post caught quite a lot of attention, including someone saying that Borderlands 3 "isn't even playable on the switch 2," to which Randy states that Borderlands 3 wasn't made with the console in mind in the first place.

Another reply came from someone begging Randy to squish Borderlands 4 down so it could fit into a Switch 2 cart, as they didn't want to purchase a game key cart. To this, Randy replied:

It's a big game. There will be a download, even for physical copies.

It's uncertain if he means that Borderlands 4's physical release on the Switch 2 will be a game key cart or if it will contain some of the game data and rely on a download for the rest. Either way, it's likely sad news for anyone hoping for the full game to be on the cartridge.

Someone else asked if the game will run at 60FPS, to which Randy replied:

It was important to us to not cut anything and to support cross play with other platforms. So, no. It'll be mostly around 30 fps, with some dips in some intense moments heavy combats or if hosting a multiplayer game in handheld mode, etc.

Still, it doesn't seem like performance issues on the Switch 2 really hinder how people enjoy games on the console. After all, Donkey Kong Bananza ended up hitting its head on the console's limitations and people still gave it rave reviews. As long as the game is fun, I'm sure Switch 2 players will enjoy it all the same.
