Valentine’s Day is about more than spending a lot of money on your significant other, going out to dinner, and eating a ton of chocolate. Above all else, it’s about spending quality time, and what better way to do that than with video games? Plenty of co-op experiences exist, but depending on your skill level and the genre that best fits your vibe, it can be difficult to narrow things down. Whatever mood you’re in, these games are a great way to spend time with your significant other.

Some games on this list are couch co-op only, so you’ll need to play on the same console. However, there are a few options where you can play online as well.

11 Gears of War: Ultimate War Addition

Save Sera together

  • Platform: Xbox, Windows

While Gears of War may not be the most romantic storyline for Valentine’s Day, it is an awesome third-person shooter with a co-op campaign. Dominic Santiago springs Marcus Fenix from detainment to help the COG battle the Locus threat consuming the planet Sera. With all of that plot out of the way, you and your partner have objectives to complete.

Gears of War is a mix of war-time and horror, and the gameplay is top-notch. The controls are simple to work out and intuitive, so even a novice can jump right in. Plus, you can ramp up or lower the difficulty at any point to match your mood. It’s a split-screen co-op, so there’s no need to be on separate consoles, and the best part? The series has five games, each offering something a little different as you battle for Sera. And it’s the best way to get hyped up for E-Day before it launches.

10 Overcooked: All You Can Eat

Hell’s Kitchen has nothing on this game

  • Platform: PlayStation, Windows, Xbox, Nintendo, Stadia

If you’re less into killing Locusts and more into cooking and serving up meals, Overcooked: All You Can Eat is the perfect couple’s game. Of course, it depends on how you play as a team. The All You Can Eat edition includes Overcooked and Overcooked 2, two incredibly fun cooking games. Serve up some good eats in different wacky kitchens while trying to hit your quota, earn cash, and hit that top score.

Players will operate different cooking stations to create and serve various dishes, all while battling kitchen hazards. Sauté on a pirate ship, fry up something in a haunted house, or satiate the Unbread’s hunger by baking a really good pizza. With simple controls and mechanics, you can team up with your love or invite others to join the fun. Either way, this game is a great way to work on those communication skills to get the best score in each level.

9 Unravel Two

The ties that bond

  • Platforms: PlayStation, Windows, Xbox, Nintendo

If you’re in the mood for more of a platform experience and a compelling story, Unravel Two might be the game to scratch that itch. Unlike the first installment, Unravel, the second title is a co-op experience. The Red and Blue Yarny connect their yarns, creating a literal bond and embarking on a journey together. Like the first game, the Yarn dolls symbolize so much more than appears as they face dangers, traverse treacherous landscapes, and escape together.

Unravel Two is a combination of platforming and puzzles that have unique solutions. Since you’re attached, you and your partner must figure out how to navigate the world as a team. While the puzzles can be challenging, the game is easy to pick up, and the controls are fairly simple, so any skill level can jump right in.

8 Minecraft Dungeons

Find treasure, smite enemies

  • Platforms: Nintendo, PlayStation, Windows, Xbox

Let me be clear on this: you don’t need to know anything about Minecraft to play Minecraft Dungeons. This quirky and fun dungeon crawler is a hack-and-slash adventure where you can team up and dive into dungeons. The Arch-Illager is out to destroy all who wronged him, and your goal is to stop him. Of course, the story matters less than chopping down your block foes with ease.

Fight baddies, solve puzzles, find treasure, and get some sweet armor and weapons while you’re at it. The game controls are simple, and you can set the difficulty level as high or low as you want. Plus, there are six expansion packs on top of the original game. That’s a lot of quality time!

7 Super Mario Bros. Wonder

Can you match the beat?

  • Platforms: Nintendo

If bright, colorful, and classic platforming is more your speed, Super Mario Bros. Wonder is an absolute treat to play. You and your partner can select one of your favorite Mario characters and save the Flower Kingdom from Bowser. This side-scrolling adventure has plenty of creative level designs, fun new power-ups, secrets, and boss battles.

Like most Mario titles, Super Mario Bros. Wonder is easy to pick up and play. While it may be whimsical, it still does require cooperation to complete levels. Otherwise, you might end up taking out your partner by going too fast or slow. Still, depending on who you choose to play as, certain characters can withstand enemy or environmental attacks, giving you a different kind of difficulty option. In addition to power-ups, players can equip badges they can purchase or earn by completing challenges. So, work as a team and defeat Bowser…again.

6 It Takes Two

Just the two of us

  • Platforms: PlayStation, Windows, Xbox, Nintendo

Hazelight Studios always manages to make some interesting games and a fun, if at times disturbing, platformer under its banner is It Takes Two. This split-screen co-op experience is all about love as a struggling married couple is headed to divorce. In a wacky turn of events, Cody and May are trapped inside their daughter’s dolls in an extreme couples therapy session.

This game is all about collaboration as players team up to get through these bizarre but fun trials. You have to work together as the puzzles are designed to force you to rely on one another. But you can also take these trials less seriously and watch your partner’s stuffed toy get destroyed over and over. No two levels are alike; players need to look at things from a new perspective each time. Mend bonds, rediscover your passion, and find ways to work together to complete this whirlwind adventure.

5 Borderlands 2

Time to find that Vault

  • Platforms: Windows, Playstation, Xbox, Linux, Android, Switch

Another fun shooter, Borderlands 2 is far less serious than Gears of War. A first-person “looter-shooter,” this game has you on the hunt for a Vault full of untold riches beyond your wildest dreams - or maybe it’s a monster. Of course, you have to beat Handsome Jack to the vault first. Players can join each other online or scoot up together for some couch co-op, complete missions, collect loot, and stay alive on Pandora.

Part of the fun of Borderlands 2 is the amount of options. Players can select a few different character types and develop them however they please within their skill tree. There’s also a variety of guns to pick up, from pistols to rocket launchers, all with different attributes and stats that can make you unstoppable, depending on how you use them. Team up with your partner and stop Handsome Jack. Pandora awaits!

4 Stardew Valley

Nothing says love like farming

  • Platforms: iOS, macOS, Windows, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Xbox, Android

If you want to keep things extremely low-key, Stardew Valley is the perfect cozy game. Don’t let its simple look fool you - there are plenty of things to do here, from farming and fishing to dungeon diving. While it’s a great solo adventure, teaming up with your loved one makes the experience even more fun. You can work together to make your dream farm a reality. Of course, it could get awkward when you try to romance the townsfolk.

You can play co-op online or in person, but that doesn’t mean you have to do everything together. You can stick side-by-side or take off and do your own thing. You can easily pour hours of your time into this title, so while Valentine’s Day may come and go, Stardew Valley is forever. No, really, this game goes on forever.

3 Halo: Master Chief Collection

Take a ride in the Warthog together

  • Platforms: Xbox, Windows

Is there a better way to spend time with your significant other than battling for humanity? Halo: The Master Chief Collection not only gives you a remastered version of the first Halo, but five other Halo titles to blast your way through. Whether playing through the campaign, mission setlists, or numerous multiplayer maps, you and your partner can team up to defeat the Covenant and the Flood.

So, why Halo? The controls are quick to pick up, you can adjust the difficulty mode, and the sections are very forgiving. Also, trying to get a Warthog into an area it has no business being is pretty hilarious. You can turn off your brain, complete objectives, and work together to make it to the end. Any title in this collection is great; you can’t go wrong. Except for Halo 3: ODST. Maybe skip that one.

2 Diablo IV

Nothing says love like slaying a demon

  • Platforms: PlayStation, Xbox, Windows

If you’re looking for a game with a darker setting and more of an action role-playing design, Diablo IV is a good choice. Choose your hero and battle the cultists of Lilith across six regions to save the corrupted. Classic Heaven versus Hell, but with barbarians, druids, and more. There are six character classes to choose from, so you and your partner can complement each other’s play styles.

Like other RPGs, players build experience, get better weapons, and forge through each level, and you can adjust the difficulty to suit your needs. Played in an isometric overhead view, it plays differently than other options on this list. The one big negative is that you must be online to play this game. But a plus is that you can play this co-op or online, so you don’t need to be in each other’s presence to eviscerate cultists together.
