Cyberpunk 2077 on the Nintendo Switch 2 has set an impressive bar for ports to Nintendo's newest console. The Switch 2 isn't going to run the latest AAA video games at the highest quality possible, it can run these games pretty well, especially in handheld mode. My Switch 2 is lighter than my Steam Deck, so having big AAA games that I can play handheld in pretty solid quality is something I want more of. For the games on this list, I went with big-name games that haven't already been announced for the Switch 2, and could probably run on the handheld.

7 reasons why a gaming handheld will be a better buy than the Switch 2

The Switch 2 has finally been announced, but don't get ahead of yourself. A gaming handheld might still end up as the better buy for these reasons.

5 Halo: The Master Chief Collection

Handheld Halo rocks

With Xbox supporting PC, PlayStation, and occasionally the original Switch, it seems likely that the company will port some of its games to the Switch 2. While the Xbox catalog of games has become massive with recent acquisitions, what I want is an old classic. Halo: The Master Chief Collection is a great pick for the Switch 2, because it's a collection of older games. All the games in the collection, which spans every FPS Halo game from Halo: CE to Halo 4, are older, so they shouldn't be too taxing on the hardware. Getting to play through six Halo campaigns on a handheld console that doesn't weigh a ton is an exciting idea, plus, the multiplayer can really put the Switch 2 online servers to the test. Xbox has been supportive of keeping the playlists up to date, and a fresh injection of players will keep the multiplayer community healthy.

4 Doom: The Dark Ages

Can it run Doom?

Doom: The Dark Ages is a chunky and technically taxing FPS game released in 2025, but id Software has demonstrated its mastery over optimizations in the past. If you didn't know, id Software and Panic Button ported Doom Eternal to the original Nintendo Switch. On a console where collections of old Kingdom Hearts games didn't run natively on the system, instead using a cloud version, Doom Eternal runs on the Nintendo Switch straight up. Doom: The Dark Ages is obviously a newer and bigger game than the previous, but the better hardware inside the Nintendo Switch 2 means there is a pretty good chance the wizards at id Software and Panic Button can get this dark and violent first-person-shooter running on the Switch 2. I want to play Doom: The Dark Ages on a handheld, and while the Steam Deck being unsupported makes me nervous, I think there is a chance.

3 Helldivers 2

A long shot, but it should happen

Helldivers 2 is a bit of a long shot, since PlayStation, which published the co-op shooter, doesn't often put its games on other consoles. Helldivers 2 was launched on PC simultaneously with the PS5, and LEGO Horizon Adventure was released on the same day as the Nintendo Switch in 2024. That means, while unlikely, it's not entirely impossible, and I think Helldivers 2 works well with Nintendo's focus on game chat. Nintendo has added a Chat button to controllers and is promoting the use of the console's camera chat feature, which would work well with the co-op focus of Helldivers 2. It's a great way to attract more players to the year-and-a-half-old multiplayer game, and it doesn't run perfectly on the Steam Deck, making a Switch 2 version quite enticing. The Helldivers 2 community was vocal about a potential Xbox port, as players simply want more people to play with. While a PlayStation release may not be ready, a Switch 2 release could be in the cards.

2 Alan Wake II

One of Remedy's best should be handheld

Alan Wake 2 is one of the best single-player experiences in recent years. The surreal survival-horror game from Remedy Entertainment, mixing in wild meta commentary and live-action footage, is an incredible ride. Due to a publishing deal with Epic Games, Alan Wake 2 is not on Steam, so getting it running on a Steam Deck requires some exact effort. It's a fairly taxing game from a technical perspective, but a Switch 2 can probably handle it, and getting to see the wild musical or some of the haunting imagery in it on a handheld sounds incredible. There is something about this kind of horror game that makes being able to lie in bed with a gaming handheld sound amazing, so Alan Wake II on Switch 2 feels like a slam dunk. Plus, it could open up the game to a larger audience, which is always great for the more obtuse AAA games.

1 Metaphor: ReFantazio

Turn-based RPGs are meant for handhelds

Atlus has a long history of putting turn-based RPGs on handhelds, so it only makes sense that its game of the year contender from 2024 is Metaphor: ReFantazio. Atlus also made the Persona games, with Persona 3 and Persona 4 having popular versions on the PlayStation Portable and PlayStation Vita, respectively. While Metaphor: ReFantazio wasn't necessarily built for a handheld, it does run on Steam Deck. Having a version on the Nintendo Switch 2 with a better screen seems perfect. It's a long game, but the turn-based combat isn't necessarily taxing from a controller's perspective, so playing it on a handheld shouldn't be an issue, and being able to put the console to sleep and come back later seems ideal. Getting through an 80-hour RPG can be daunting, but having it in a form where you can pick up and play for a short burst should make it much easier for people to get through.

So many modern games to play on handheld

While PC handhelds are far more ubiquitous in 2025 compared to when the original Switch launched, there are still tons of ports that I would want on Nintendo Switch 2. Being able to play the biggest and best games with a handheld is always exciting, and the slimmer and lighter form factor of the Switch 2 compared to the Steam Deck makes it far more appealing to use in bed or on the go. If the Switch 2 can handle Cyberpunk 2077, it should be able to handle most AAA games that have already come out.
