When it comes to digital note-taking, the options can feel overwhelming. But for those who cherish the natural feel of pen and paper, finding the right software that strikes the perfect balance between the flexibility of handwriting and power of digital organization can be a game-changer.

I have tried several such apps, and among them, Xournal++ stands out for anyone who misses the natural feel of putting pen to paper. Whether you are a student marking up lecture slides, a professional brainstorming, or simply someone who prefers a more tactile approach to digital work, Xournal++ bridges the gap between traditional and modern note-taking seamlessly.

Don’t invest in a note-taking app until you check into these things

Cross-platform solution

Accessible on all your devices

Unlike many of its rivals that lock you into a single ecosystem, Xournal++ is a true cross-platform solution. They have native apps for Windows, Mac, and Linux. There is an Android app as well, although it’s still in beta.

This means you can seamlessly transition your work from your powerful desktop computer to your portable laptop and enjoy consistent functionality.

Xournal++ also offers a native Android app, currently in beta. I can easily view and even make basic edits to .xopp files on my Galaxy S23 Ultra and Galaxy Tab. Of course, it’s not as rich as the desktop counterpart, but it gets the job done. However, a lack of iPad app is a noticeable gap here.

High on customization

And robust exporting options

One of the things I truly appreciate about Xournal++ is its deep focus on customization and flexibility. It really lets me customize the entire note-taking experience to my personal workflow.

For instance, I can easily customize the toolbars and decide which pens, highlighters, and other functions are immediately accessible. This saves me time and keeps my most-used tools right at my fingertips.

I also love being able to choose from different paper backgrounds and shades – whether I need lined paper for writing, grid paper for sketching diagrams, or just a plain blank canvas for freeform thoughts, Xournal++ has me covered.

Plus, the ability to import custom images as backgrounds opens up even more possibilities. It truly feels like my own personalized digital notebook, adaptable to whatever task I’m tackling.

Excellent PDF capabilities

Annotate your PDF files in no time

For me, one of the absolute standout features of Xournal++ is its capability as a PDF annotation powerhouse. The developer didn’t just add a PDF viewer and call it a day.

I can import any PDF document directly into Xournal++, and then the magic happens. I can highlight crucial sections, underline key phrases, and even add my own handwritten comments or draw diagrams directly on top of the existing content.

This is incredibly useful for so many scenarios. For work, I can easily review reports, contracts, or presentations, and add my thoughts and revisions right on the document. It’s crucial for my digital workflows and make sure my annotations are always tied directly to the main material without needing separate notes of complicated software.

Packed with drawing tools

Supports pressure-sensitive styluses too

Xournal++ simply excels at handwritten note-taking. It’s not just a drawing app, it’s specifically designed to make digital handwriting feel as natural and intuitive as possible. It supports pressure-sensitive styluses from all the major manufacturers.

Beyond just the natural feel, Xournal++ provides a robust set of features that empower my note-taking. I have access to a variety of tools with different thicknesses and styles and a full spectrum of colors that allow me to organize my thoughts visually or focus on key points.

The highlighters are just as versatile and let me color-code or draw attention to specific sections like terms and conditions or amount due in a PDF file.

And when I make a mistake, the eraser tool comes into play where I can choose to erase specific strokes, a small point, or even entire sections quickly and efficiently. Other goodies include shape drawing tools, fill shape functionality, text tool, and even the ability to record audio and place clips alongside handwritten notes.

Free and open-source

Full transparency

You can download, install, and use Xournal++ without paying a single dime. Unlike many freemium apps, there are no hidden fees, no subscription models, and no ‘pro’ versions with essential features locked behind a paywall.

This is fantastic because it makes a high-quality, powerful note-taking tool accessible to everyone (especially for students who are often tight on the budget).

Now, let’s come to the open-source part. The app’s source code is publicly available for anyone to inspect, modify, and distribute. I can actually see how the software works under the hood. This builds trust in the application, especially when I’m dealing with my personal notes and data.

Say goodbye to notebooks

Of course, like any productivity tool, Xournal++ is far from perfect. The UI needs a modern makeover with fresh icons and better stability, as I often ran into issues with running the Mac app. But these are just minor inconveniences and nitpicks compared to the available feature set on offer.

From quick diagrams and detailed annotations on PDFs to effective brainstorming sessions, Xournal++ ticks all the boxes and delivers a fluid and intuitive environment. If you want to take your note-taking setup to the next level, check out ReMarkable Paper Pro.
