Summary

  • Gmail now groups all purchase and delivery emails into a single Purchases view.
  • The Arriving soon widget highlights packages due within 24 hours at the top of your inbox.
  • Now available on mobile and web; try it to stay on top of your purchases.

Online shopping is super convenient, but keeping track of everything after you've made your purchases can be a hassle. Usually, when you purchase something from an online store, it will send you an email receipt containing the details of your purchase, including the tracking number. So, if you want to track your package or simply double-check your purchase, you can do so from that email.

The problems begin (at least for me) when you either purchase multiple things, receive a lot of emails in your inbox, or experience both simultaneously. Now that handy-dandy email gets lost within the tides of messages, and if you're not someone who really organises their inbox (like me), re-finding that one email can be a real hassle.

Fortunately, for people who are adverse to using labels and bookmarks (like me), Google is making things a lot easier. The company is adding a new feature that can keep tabs on your purchases so you don't have to.

Gmail's new purchases section keeps your incoming packages at the forefront

In a post on Google's blog, The Keyword, the company explains how it's improving the lives of scatterbrained individuals like myself:

First, we’re rolling out a new view that brings all your purchase and delivery updates together in one place. This will give you a bird’s eye view of all your upcoming package deliveries in one simple, organized list. Don’t worry — we’ll continue to show packages that are set to arrive within 24 hours at the top of your primary inbox, as well as in a summary card within your purchase emails. This is an entirely new view that lets you see all purchase-related emails and package updates in one simple, streamlined interface.

You can take a peek at this new UI in the image above. The left one shows the new "Arriving soon" widget, which shows off every package currently winging its way to you (which includes riveting product names such as "Aromatic candle" and "Very nice shades"). The right one shows off the shiny new "Purchases" section, where you can see all the stuff you bought.

Google says this new feature is rolling out right now to both mobile and web users, so by the time you've read this article, there's a chance you already have it up and running on your account. Sounds like a good excuse to do some online shopping to me; give the system a little bit of a stress test. Regardless, I'll have to see if this makes one of our writers, Megan Ellis, even more certain that they'll stick with Gmail over Outlook.
