Whether you choose Dropbox or Google Drive, cross-platform availability shouldn’t be an issue. Both services are available on Windows, Mac, iPhone, Android, iPad, and, of course, the web. Unlike Google Drive, Dropbox also has a native app on Linux.

User interface

Keeping in line with other Google apps and services, Google Drive recently received a much-needed Material You makeover on the web. Google Drive also features a brand-new Home menu which shows suggested files, folders, and chips at the top to help you identify relevant ones in no time.

Dropbox also offers a neat-looking Home menu with suggestions at the top and all your files and folders at the bottom. Both services support a handy dark mode and several customization options to change the appearance of unnecessary menus on the main page.

Between the two, we will give an edge to Dropbox due to a dedicated Photos tab that lets you check all of your media uploads in a single place. With Google Drive, you must visit Google Photos separately.

Google Drive is quite customizable. For instance, if you prefer the old behavior, you can revert to the previous layout from Settings. You can even change density and open PDFs in preview or a new tab. Another neat trick is the ability to change the folder color for better differentiation.

Integration with Google apps and services

This shouldn’t come as a surprise. Google Drive has a seamless integration with all the company’s apps and services. For instance, you can create new Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Forms right from the top menu. You can also access your Google Calendar entries, Keep notes, tasks, and contacts from the sidebar.

Android and Chromebook backup

If you are an Android or Chromebook user, you can back up your messages, app data, call history, and a lot more with your Drive account. When you switch to another Android device, you can simply restore the data from Google Drive and complete the setup in no time.

Gemini AI

If you have a Google One AI Premium plan, explore Gemini AI in Google Drive. It can give you brief information about a file, summarize a topic, answer a question, and you can enter prompts to get back what you are looking for.

For example, you can simply select a PDF or Google Docs file and click Ask Gemini to view a quick summary on the sidebar.

PDF editor

Dropbox comes with a feature-rich PDF editor. You can draw over it, use the highlight tool, add text, comment, self-sign, and even send it for signature. You won’t even need a separate PDF editor. In comparison, Google Drive has a built-in bare-bones PDF viewer.

Screen recorder

Dropbox packs in a useful screen recorder tool to record, save, and collaborate on clips. Capture can come in handy when you want to record an educational course or give an overview of a new app to your employees or students.

Productivity add-ons

Dropbox has an ecosystem of services and apps to elevate your workflow in no time. For example, Dropbox Paper is a capable alternative to Google Docs to help you draft perfect documents. Passwords provides another robust option to save your login entries and account information securely across devices. DocSend lets you send documents securely and track activity in real-time. There is also a Backup tool to back up all your devices automatically.

Here is where Dropbox truly marches ahead of Google Drive. With Dropbox, you can password-protect a link, set an expiration date, and even disable downloads in a shared link. These are some of the robust privacy features to keep prying eyes away from your confidential files.

With Google Drive, you can only change the participant’s role – Viewer, Commenter, or Editor. There is no built-in option to password-protect or set expiry on your generated links.

Google Drive vs. Dropbox: Price

Google offers a generous free plan to get started. You get 15GB of free space that’s divided between Drive, Photos, and Gmail. Dropbox only offers 2GB of free space. As for the pricing, both are similarly priced at $10 per month for 2TB of cloud space. Unlike Dropbox, Google Drive also offers cheaper Google One plans, like lower-tiers of 100GB space for $2 per month and 200GB space for $3 per month. Google One will also unlock premium media editing features for you in Google Photos.
