Summary
- Fake-call detection uses a device handshake in the Phone by Google app to verify and flag spoofed calls.
- Circle to Search can select full outfits for shopping results.
- Google Photos wardrobe catalogs clothes for virtual mix-and-match; Personal Safety and Play Books are also getting minor updates.
Google's June Android Drop includes several new features, but the most noteworthy is fake call detection. With this turned on, Google says your Android device can verify whether a call is actually coming from your contact's device, making it more difficult for scammers to pretend they're calling from a number you trust.
A small warning notification will pop up on your phone as the call comes in, allowing you to end it quickly. Given I receive at least two to three spoofed spam calls per day, this is definitely a feature I plan to take advantage of if it ends up working well.
Google says this feature is enabled by default and operates behind the scenes, describing it as a "digital handshake between devices." When a contact calls you and you're both using the Phone by Google app, their phone sends a confirmation signal to your phone to verify the call is legitimate and coming from their device. While it's still unclear, this suggests the feature will only work with Google's official Phone app. To be fair, this is the default phone app on most Android devices.
This feature is coming to devices running Android 12 and up with the Phone by Google app. Google has more information about how it's spotting scammers impersonating your contacts in its latest Google Security Blog Post.
Several other new features are also landing on Android devices
It's time to step up your fashion game
Other new features include better outfit recognition with Circle to Search. Google says that you can now draw a circle around everything someone is wearing to get search results for where you can buy it, rather than circling individual items. This feature is coming to devices running Android 14 and up that support Circle to Search.
Sticking with the fashion theme, Google Photos is getting a new feature called Google Photos wardrobe that catalogs your clothes and turns them into snapshots on your phone, allowing you to mix and match outfits and try them on virtually. This feature is coming to users in the US, India, and Brazil who are running Android 10 or later.

Next up are new features in the Personal Safety app focused on keeping kids safe, including displaying medical information and emergency contacts on a device's lockscreen. Other new features include Google Play Books, which allows you to highlight a passage to ask questions or dive deeper into specific themes, context, or characters. This feature is rolling out now.
To download this update, open your Android device's Settings app and tap the Update option. On my Pixel 10 Pro, I head to Settings > System > Software Updates and tap System Update.
