Last year's HP Omen Transcend 14 felt like a turning point for the storied gaming brand, combining high-end features, an attractive price, and a slim build that you could carry around with you anywhere. Now, HP is building on the design with the new Omen 16 Slim. It shares a lot of DNA with the Omen Transcend 14, just with a larger screen, and it's arriving alongside a trio of refreshes for HP's existing Omen lineup.
HP Omen Transcend 14 (2024) vs Zephyrus G14 (2024): Premium gaming laptops take center stage
Which new gaming laptop announced at CES 2024 is better for you?
The Omen 16 Slim is bigger, but also smaller
And it still packs a ton of power
As the name implies, this is HP's Omen 16 design that's been slimmed down for maximum portability. HP says it's 16% thinner, in fact, clocking in at just 0.78 inches at its thinnest point. On the weight front, it's 5.3 pounds. That's not quite as thin or light as Asus' Zephyrus G16, but it's close.
Under the hood, HP offers up to an Nvidia RTX 5070 laptop GPU and an Intel Core Ultra 9 285H. You can pair them with up to 32GB of DDR5-5600 memory, which is user upgradable, along with a 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD. Unlike the Omen Transcend 14, you get a proper AC adapter on the Omen 16 Slim, enabling up to 105W of Total Platform Power (TPP) with the laptop's "Unleash mode." There's still a USB-C input, which support power delivery, along with a trio of USB-A ports, an Ethernet connection, and an HDMI 2.1 output.
The only place the Omen 16 Slim misses out compared to the Transcend 14 is the display. You can configure the Omen 16 Slim with up to a 1600p IPS panel, which supports VRR between 60Hz and 240Hz. For now, HP isn't offering the laptop with an OLED display like the Transcend 14 features. HP hasn't shared pricing or release details for the Omen Slim 16 yet.
HP refreshes its other Omen offerings
Some familiar faces packing new hardware
Alongside the Omen 16 Slim, HP is updating three other gaming laptops: the familiar Omen Transcend 14, the Omen 17, and the Victus 15. Nothing has changed with the Omen Transcend 14, short of support for Nvidia's new Blackwell graphics cards. You can now cram in up to an RTX 5070 mobile GPU, but the design and specs remain otherwise the same.
The bulky Omen 17 is in a similar boat, getting a spec bump up to an RTX 5070. HP is also offering this laptop with one of AMD's latest Ryzen AI processors, though. You can pack in up to a Ryzen AI 9 365, while the previous version topped out at a Ryzen 9 8945HS.
The budget-focused Victus 15 is seeing the biggest overhaul. It, too, is getting a spec bump, with up to either an Intel Core i7-14650HX or AMD Ryzen AI 7 H 350, along with an RTX 4060 mobile graphics card. HP says it'll eventually offer the laptop with "next-gen Nvidia graphics," likely referring to the unannounced but heavily rumored RTX 5050.
Nvidia's rumored entry-level RTX 50 is real, and it's looking worryingly weak
Maybe a bit too 'entry-level'.
There are more pressing improvements elsewhere, however. The Victus 15 now supports USB-C charging up to 100W, and there's a second SSD slot internally, allowing you to upgrade your storage. HP added a bit of flair to the design, too. It's offering the Victus 15 in three color options: Mica Silver, Performance Blue, or Powder Pink.
