Summary
- Microsoft has extended the support for Microsoft 365 apps on Windows 10.
- Users will continue to receive security updates for these apps until October 10, 2028, even after Windows 10's end of life.
- While Microsoft 365 apps will still work on an unsupported Windows 10 system, performance and reliability could be affected.
Microsoft's made one thing loud and clear — Windows 10 is nearing its End of Life status this October. And the tech giant hasn't been subtle about it, at all. In fact, it's taken every possible opportunity to make Windows 10 users aware of it. However, many are adamant about sticking it out with Windows 10 for as long as they possibly can.
Microsoft's solution for this is simple: slowly strip away features and functionality people like and leave them with no choice but to upgrade. For instance, though it was no secret that Windows 10 losing support would mean it wouldn't get any more updates, users believed that their go-to Microsoft 365 apps would be safe and would still get updates.
A few months ago, the company updated its support documentation and noted that Microsoft 365 Apps will no longer be supported on Windows 10 once it loses support on October 14, 2025. In a turn of events, it looks like the company ended up changing course, and might end up letting you stick with Windows 10 after all.
Microsoft 365 apps will receive security updates until 2028
As spotted by Neowin, Microsoft updated its documentation titled Windows 10 end of support and Microsoft 365 Apps and noted that the company will continue to provide security updates for Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows 10 until October 10, 2028. The support document states:
To help maintain security while you transition to Windows 11, Microsoft will continue providing security updates for Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows 10 for three years after Windows 10 reaches end of support.
Another support article titled What Windows end of support means for Office and Microsoft 365 notes the same in slightly different words:
In the interest of maintaining your security while you upgrade to Windows 11, we will continue providing security updates for Microsoft 365 on Windows 10 for a total of three years after Windows 10 end of support, ending on October 10, 2028.
Microsoft mentions that you'll be able to download these security updates through the standard update channels. For reference, Microsoft’s documentation previously noted:
Lastly, Microsoft 365 Apps will no longer be supported after October 14, 2025, on Windows 10 devices. To use Microsoft 365 Applications on your device, you will need to upgrade to Windows 11.
Nonetheless, Microsoft quietly extending when 365 apps lose support doesn’t mean the company will get off users’ backs about updating to Windows 11. The tech giant still says that though 365 apps like Word will continue to function even after Windows 10 loses support, an “unsupported” operating system can cause performance and reliability issues when running Microsoft 365 Apps. So, the only difference here really is that you’ll keep getting security updates for Microsoft 365 apps if you choose not to make the jump, but Microsoft still wants that jump to happen sooner rather than later.
