By now, Microsoft's made it loud and clear that Windows 10 is reaching its End of Life status this October. In fact, it's taken every opportunity to convince people to let Windows 10 go and finally upgrade to Windows 11. What's strange is that in May, the Redmond-based giant decided to extend support for Microsoft 365 apps on Windows 10 for three more years.

The reason this matters is because, just a few months earlier, Microsoft mentioned in its support documentation that Microsoft 365 apps would no longer be supported on Windows 10 once it loses support on October 14, 2025. Extending support for Office apps was definitely a relief for Windows 10 fans who weren’t ready to switch. But now, the company just quietly announced something that has the opposite effect, and it might make some Windows 10 users rethink how long they really want to stick around.

Office apps on Windows 10 won’t get new features after 2026

As reported by The Verge, Microsoft has confirmed that Office apps on Windows 10 will stop receiving updates in August 2026. Though the Redmond-based giant will continue to push out security updates to these Office apps until October 2028, it’ll begin to phase out new feature support gradually.

Microsoft 365 users running Windows 10 will continue to receive feature updates until Version 2608 is released, after which they’ll only receive security updates until October 10, 2028, as mentioned above. The exact date and month of the cutoff depends on which update channel you’re on. Current Channel users (both Microsoft 365 Personal and Family users) will lose feature support in August 2026, while Monthly Enterprise Channel users will lose support on October 13, 2026. Finally, Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel users will stop receiving new Office features on January 12, 2027.

In Microsoft's favor, the company never promised that Microsoft 365 apps would continue to receive new features until 2028 when it made the announcement in May. It only said security updates would continue for three more years:

In the interest of maintaining your security while you upgrade to Windows 11, we will continue providing security updates for Microsoft 365 on Windows 10 for a total of three years after Windows 10 end of support, ending on October 10, 2028.

Still, the way this new information was quietly slipped into the support documentation might leave some users feeling blindsided, especially those who assumed feature updates were part of the extended support timeline.

So, if you're someone who relies on Microsoft 365 apps heavily and hasn't updated yet, your time on Windows 10 might be more limited than you thought, at least if you care about getting the latest features.
